About Us

Our Mission Is Simple:Better Lives for Dogs & Families

Since 2018, we've been dedicated to transforming relationships between dogs and their families through science-based, compassionate training methods.

Our Story

Born from a Passion for Dogs

K9 Learning Academy was founded with a simple belief: every dog deserves quality training, and every family deserves the joy of a well-behaved companion. What started as one trainer's passion has grown into a team of dedicated professionals serving families across Horry County and the Grand Strand.

We've seen firsthand how the right training can transform not just dogs, but entire families. Dogs that were once labeled "problem dogs" are now beloved family members. Families that were considering rehoming their pets are now living harmoniously together.

Our approach is different because we don't just train dogs—we educate families. We believe that lasting change comes from understanding, not force. That's why every program includes owner education, ensuring you have the skills to be your dog's lifelong advocate.

Our Philosophy

We Fix the Root Cause,Not Just the Symptoms

A lot of trainers work on the symptoms — the barking, the pulling, the lunging — without ever finding out why it's happening. We do things differently. Once we identify the root problem, we can fix the behavior permanently — not just temporarily.

Symptom Management

What most trainers do

Suppressing the unwanted behavior with corrections
Managing the environment to avoid triggers
Teaching a replacement command and hoping it sticks
Labeling the dog as "stubborn" or "dominant"
Temporary compliance that fades under stress
Our Approach

Root Cause Resolution

What we do instead

Identifying the emotional state driving the behavior
Understanding stress, fear, frustration, and arousal levels
Addressing the underlying cause, not the surface symptom
Changing how the dog feels, not just what they do
Permanent behavior change that holds in the real world

When you change how a dog feels, you change what a dog does — permanently. That's the difference between managing a problem and solving it.

Matt Dellaira

Matt Dellaira

Founder & Certified Dog Trainer

Matt has been training dogs professionally for over 12 years. He got his start working under Joel Silverman and kept learning from other trainers, vets, and behaviorists along the way. Over time, he built an approach that focuses on how dogs actually think and feel — not just getting them to follow commands. As the founder of K9 Learning Academy, Matt oversees every program and works directly with the rest of the team. He believes in helping a dog understand what is being asked of it rather than forcing compliance through repetition.
